From Ashes to Easter

Each family is asked to pick up a special Lenten container, and keep it on or near the dining table in your home.  Put in some coins each day during Lent and pray for the missions.  Return your Lent box to the parish on Easter.  Money collected till help Missions Abroad, our Diocesan Home Missions, and International Mission Projects.

Acting Wisely

If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, for it is written:

“He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you….”     Luke 4:9-10

At first glance, this suggestion might seem to make sense.  If people saw a miracle like this, wouldn’t they automatically follow Jesus?  But Jesus wisely dismisses the devil’s suggestions, because this quick, flashy miracle would not have helped to form bonds of love between Jesus and his followers.

Lasting relationships only develop with time.  And they have to be based on love.   It was only through his death, and resurrection that Jesus could reveal the depths of his love.  The cross is the ultimate sign pf what God was willing to endure for us.  Nothing else can take its place.

Jesus, you showed your wisdom by dismissing the devil’s suggestions.  Give me your wisdom, so that you may do the same.       Fr. Kenneth Grabner, C.S. C.
