Spiritual and Religious

Upon this rock I will build my church…    Matthew 16:18

It is not uncommon today to hear someone say, “I am spiritual, but not religious.” By this they usually mean they see themselves as spiritual people, but they are not practicing members of any particular faith community. Some of them would even suggest that this is a higher, more excellent way.

But this was not the teaching of Jesus. Jesus passed to Peter the mantle of leadership and his intention to establish a community of believers. Moreover, this church would be established for all time and would not be destroyed: “The gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.” It is good for us to be spiritual. But Christian spirituality finds its growth and fulfillment in the church that Jesus founded. As a follower of Jesus, we should say, “I am spiritual, and I am religious.”
