Taking Another Shot
When [Peter] saw how [strong] the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink,
he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Matthew 14:30
When I chose Peter as my confirmation name, I had no idea how frequently I would think of him. You see, whenever I’m on the tee of a par 3 over water, I gratefully recall his boldness in asking Jesus to walk on water. I take my stance, a practice swing and hit. In seconds, I know whether I’ve carried the water, hit the green, or, like Peter, come up short, ending up in the water.
Either way, neither my round of golf nor his discipleship is over. I always can take another shot just as Peter continued his lessons in discipleship after Jesus pulled him back into the boat. Discipleship, like golf it seems, requires a simultaneous mix of bold confidence and absolute humility.
Jesus, bless me today with Peter’s fearless companionship. Make me bold when that’s what you want
and humble when I get it wrong. Fr. James Krings
St. Lincy Bibiana will at Mass next Sunday. She serves at the Home of Angels in Temple.
