A Heart Hungry for Surrender
The kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure buried in a field…… Matthew 13.44
The person who found the hidden treasure in today’s Gospel did not totally claim the treasure at first. The treasure had to be earned, possessions and agendas had to be relinquished. Surrender had to take place in the heart so that the discoverer of the treasure would recognize that the reign of God begins right here in the empty heart.
Try to identify with the one who found the treasure. Throw a dragnet into the sea of your heart. You may be surprised at what you pull in. There will be riches and treasures: there will be hindrances and obstacles. Evaluate what you need to live a vibrant, holy life. How can you live on the earth and be faithful to the reign of God already in your midst? What does selling all you have to obtain the pearl of great price mean to you?
Like King Solomon, I ask for a heart wise enough to discern right from wrong. I ask for a heart hungry enough to surrender everything for the treasure that God places in my life this day. Sr. Macrina Wiederkehr, O.S. B.
Service
One Sunday morning, the pastor noticed little Alex standing in the foyer of the church staring up at a large plaque. It was covered with names and small American flags mounted on either side of it. The six-year old had been staring at the plaque for some time, so the pastor walked up, stood beside the little boy, and said quietly, “Good Morning Alex,.
“Good Morning Pastor,” he replied, still focused on the plaque. “Pastor, what is this?”
The pastor said, “Well son, it’s a memorial to all the young men and women who died in the service.” Soberly, they just stood together, staring at the large plaque.
Finally, Little Alex’s voice, barely audible and trembling with fear asked, “Which service, the 8:30 or the 10:45?”
