Gratitude for your Word
So shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth Isaiah 55:11
She’s had a hard life: Married before 20, she stayed with her abusive husband long enough to see their children into adolescence. Her current husband begs on the streets, garnering enough to keep him in alcohol, while Ella cares for his chronically ill mother.
Leading a retreat, I watched Ella carefully take notes of everything we reflected upon. I saw her make a personal card for each retreatant. Especially, I noticed Ella at prayer. She’s discovered prayer in the last few years. The joy it gives her, the home she’s found, the delight she takes in it, and her dedication to it, shine from her whole body.
Ella has no wage earning job, no marketable skills, and no so many teeth. Yet it strikes me that Ella fulfills Isaiah’s words: she is doing God’s will, achieving the end for which he has sent her. For she is becoming God’s own word, the word from his mouth that she alone can speak. It’s a word of prayer and love, simplicity, commitment and peace, that waters the thirsty earth.
Thank you, Lord, for sending your word. Mary Marrocco
