We are Called…….What a Relief!!
I did not come to call the righteous by sinners. Mathew 9:13
We may think we have a fairly good idea of what Jesus means. But let’s take a closer look at the two key words, “righteous” and “sinners”.
A righteous person is one who has all of his or her ducks in a row when it comes to living a good life. However, when Jesus uses the word righteous here, he means “self righteous.” This changes our perspective. The self righteous person regularly thinks, “I‘m pretty good… and most of the people I hang out with are pretty good, too…But there are a lot of other people who are not good and by golly we know who they are, too!”
This is not who Jesus says he came to call. His interest is in “sinners”. A sinner is anyone who sins and a sin is any action or choice that is harmful to our relationship with God and other people and the two cannot be separated. That means we’re all “sinners”, right? Among our many sins is, you guessed it, self righteousness. Ah, that means that Jesus came to call us, doesn’t it? What a relief!
Lord Jesus, Help me to put self righteousness behind me.
Peanuts
A tour bus driver is driving with a bus load of seniors down a highway to Branson, when he is tapped on his shoulder by a little old lady. She offers him a handful of peanuts, which he gratefully munches up.
After about fifteen minutes, she taps him on the shoulder again and hands him another handful of peanuts. She repeats this gesture about five more times.
When she is about to hand him another batch again, he asks the little old lady, “Why don’t you eat the peanuts yourself?”
We can’t chew them because we’ve no teeth,” she replied.
The puzzled driver asks, “Why do you buy them, then?”
The old lady replied, “We just love the chocolate around them.”
